... Hi! This is, uh, my first ever gift exchange, so I... hope I'm doing this right? And this is, like, reasonable requests/the general format/tone they should be in? (Aaaa..!) Sorry if I've messed up somewhere...
I'm mostly hoping for, like, explorations of Judaism and Jewishness and Yiddishkeit and the way characters interact with that (including, if it fits, rejecting it/parts of it! or being hesitant! "Apikores" is still very Jewish.).

That could be focused on a single character, in backstory-building-ways or in following-thoughts-during-canon-events ways or in any other way of focusing on a single character,
or through characters' relationships and the way those are affected by/affect/interact with the characters' Judaism,
or through worldbuilding institution stuff, or, etc. This isn't an exhaustive list, just, thoughts of ways.

I skim over sex scenes, so like if that's the direction the fic ends up going, then that's fine go for it, but I'd rather if its not the main focus/majority.
I... think I wouldn't want AUs, because I feel like it would be hard to explore the Jewishness of the characters-in-the-work in an AU? But I haven't read all that many AU fics so I'm not sure how much you can still do within AUs so if you think you can get some good thoughts about characters' Jewishness in an AU, then, go for it? (My thoughts are the same on crossovers, I think.)

I won't be insulted or feel like it isn't a fill (unless it's like, absolutely ignoring any sort of even vague directionality, I guess. maybe.), I'll just take it as feedback that I asked for too much.)

In other projects-awaiting-progress on this blog, I HAVE been making more progress looking at the tech politics of She-Ra, and I've definitely got at least one interesting thing to say about it.

That said, I'm still not totally finished, I petered out a bit after Season 3 Episode 2 so I've just got a few more... wait, what do you MEAN Season FOUR dropped?? With another THIRTEEN EPISODES???
Gosh DARNIT.
(I'll probably post after finishing looking at just Season 3, and then dive into S4 later.)

In other media news, slightly-more-marketed/budgeted-Marvel is a COWARD and fricking CANCELLED Cloak And Dagger?? That was their BEST THING GOING. And the ratings showed it! This is just to ~fit better~ into their BS little ~large-scale media-mass~. Screw you and your constrictive little overarching plan. CaD was better and had more to say than any Marvel Studios movie this side of Winter Soldier, and I'm still on the fence about that one.

... and I'm falling into the CW's Batwoman. What can I say -- I'm a fricking SUCKER for high-intensity close-and-emotionally-fraught sister-relationships, and Lewis Carroll. (And the fact that some of the fandom IS doing great stuff with her being Jewish, even if the show isn't, is a bonus.)

It's BEEN A WHILE, chevre! Look, in my defense, I'm bad at doing things. Let's make up for it with a double-header.

This'll be looking at Marvel Rising: Battle Of The Bands and Marvel Rising: Operation Shuri. Despite their themes of communication, neither of them featured ALL that much smartphone usage, and a few places that struck me as notable exceptions. Also, the phone colors are still shifting, but seem to be less so, which lets us keep our sense of how much they care about the phones in particular. (But gosh DARN give me back Squirrel Girl's green phone! She looked good with it!)

(Also, unrelatedly, I LOVE their casual-hero outfits in Operation Shuri. Ghost Spider's GOGGLES?? GREAT.)

Battle Of The Bands, thematically, picks up where Chasing Ghosts left off -- with Gwen's individualist-insistance-on-compartmentalizing and lack of communication. It specifically uses her cellphone as the meeting-point, the place where she tries to keep all her separate lives organized and distinct, and it is through that that the separate lives intersect and interrupt each other. (As opposed to, for example, showing it like Mrs. Doubtfire did, with the character having two commitments at th

Operation Shuri doesn't have much -- possibly, if we read her hologram-bracelet as a smartphone, at least some of the stuff it does (e.g. being the instrument) can be thought of as apps, but even then it doesn't really play into any themes.

And lastly. of course. #BringBackSquirrelGirlsGreenSmartphone2020 . I'm fine with most of the other changes, I guess, but DANGIT.

Playing With Fire came out a few days ago (and it was GREAT), and I've already got it jotted down, but let's pace this out. It'll go up... probably when the next few episodes get announced and given dates. Something to tide us over while we wait in anticipation to find out who America Chavez is in lesbians for.

OH LOOK it's been a month. Uh, whoops. Well, without further ado, the smartphone appearances and non-appearances in Marvel Rising: Heart Of Iron. And then some comments.

In general, there really wasn't much. There weren't all that many places where it would have fit in -- the episode was a lot of fighting -- so that isn't all that surprising. What I do what to point out, though, is how much they didn't think about it. Not only in the missed example, where we see them pulling a "They cannot communicate! Oh no!" plot point despite Squirrel Girl having a phone, but also in the design itself.

Ms. Marvel's phone has changed color from the red in the previous ones, to a lighter pink, and Squirrel Girl's changed to Ms. Marvel's previous red, from the green that it was previously -- before, two appearances after that, suddenly being grey.

(And that's fine! This isn't a complaint -- minor details in the coloring are just an expected artefact of regularly and efficiently getting out these things, without making it an Ordeal.

There's nothing much we can conclude about HOW they think about smartphones from this movie, but we do learn about HOW MUCH they deliberately think about them -- not much. Which is great for our purposes, because they won't be, like, ~trying~ to use smartphones or anything -- they'll use them only if they happen to think about them, and know how to use them. Only if they happen to find a use that makes them think of them.

(Also though, as a last thing, I have to say: I DO like the green MUCH better, so I'm hoping whoever does the coloring for the next ones goes back to that.)

FRICK this was much longer, but then I lost it in a browser crash so y'all get this, sorry. Oh yeah, spoilers (although Marvel Rising really runs on the strength of its characters (and a little bit pacing/editing/cutting/stuff), not its plot).

Marvel Rising is a series, so we'll probably be seeing more of it (Heart Of Iron drops April 3rd), and I'll be keeping an eye out. And even if, as was pointed out in the video that inspired me to look for this, not that much in the mainline Live Action Marvel movies, cell phones do appear at least a bit in Spiderverse, and probably elsewhere.

I'll also probably, at some point soon, toss out a post with some actual thoughts generalizing off of this list. But in the meantime, feel free to give your own thoughts in the comments if you have any!

(Also I don't want to dump two whole things now -- and also like my thought on this aren't even half put-together -- but at some point someone remind me that I want to thoughtdump about "Is is canon" as a literary criticism lens which is actually extremely widely used, and what some of the reasons for that popularity might be.)

(I've been trending towards using Dreamwidth for my mostly-indepedent-rants-especially-fandom-rants, so let's lean in to that.)
(Also this isn't a full-length or fully-developed rant. Think of it as a vort, or a squib.)

or,  The Difference Between Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass.

A first point, To be clear -- as is evidenced from the title, my actually-holding-a-position of "stop acting like they're the saME" is sourced primarily from The View From Saturday, and not, like, actually reading the books and coming on my own to the conclusion that "they're clearly different and it's doing a disservice to them". I've found quite a few points where I realize that I'd be intolerably hipster if I was more assertive. This is one of those.

Wonderland is about nonsense that comes from authority figures,
whereas Looking Glass is about nonsense that comes from rules.

Hence why we see The Duchess ("I speak severely to my boy, // I beat him when he sneezes; // For he can thoroughly enjoy // The pepper when he pleases!"),
the White Rabbit ("Oh! the Duchess, the Duchess! Oh! won't she be savage if I've kept her waiting!"),
and the King and Queen Of Hearts ("Off with her head!") in Wonderland,

but Humpty Dumpty ("When I use a word, ... it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less."),
the White Knight ("Everybody that hears me sing it—either it brings the tears into their eyes, or else—’ ‘Or else what?’ said Alice, for the Knight had made a sudden pause. ‘Or else it doesn’t, you know."),
and Tweedledee and Tweedledum ("That's logic!") through the Looking Glass.

And why Wonderland ends with Alice refusing to behave as a witness in a Royal Trial presided by the King and Queen Of Hearts,
while Looking Glass ends with Alice refusing to behave as a hostess of a dinner party attended by the Red and White Queens.

On the structural level as well -- while I'll admit I can't find a clear way to shoe-horn in Wonderland's "she walked around looking for new stuff" into this framework, you can't deny that Looking Glass's famous overarching-chess-puzzle is extremely "logic"-colored.

There's probably more I could pull for this -- and definitely evidence against it, but this seems to at least get the point across.

RIP [livejournal.com profile] opportunitygrrl

Even as your tracks get covered by the dust know that you'll shine bright forever in our hearts.
Now sleep -- sleep, until some far future time, when we find you in your rest and finally get to sit with you, and see those Martian sunsets you've loved so much, sleep.
Take your rest. You deserve it. You deserve it so, so, much.

Yeah, I (finally) got around to watching and finishing it.

I know I'm, like, a couple months late -- I took my time, as one OUGHT to for 90% of TV series, darn Netflix and their policy of "let's dump whole seasons all at once like unwanted litters"* -- but, like.

First of all -- it was, of course, very fun, and great to see them actually, like, thinking about their audience's experience re. gender, race, etc. seriously, and all that.

But that said. Let's get into the politics of technology.
Mostly 'cause, like, it's really WEIRD?

[ Some spoilers ahead for, obviously, She-Ra, but also some Nimona gets touched on with a warning before it ]

SPOILERS, to be clear, for the first season up to the second-to-last episode )

Oh dang I never did any sort of "The great thing about Chanukkah is how it's basically The Holiday Of Historical Revisionism" rant here! This would have been a great place for it!

LIKE AN UNSOLICITED COMMENT

EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT SHE LITERALLY ENDED HER POST "What else would you like to see?"

WHAT IF I WAS RUDE??

(Oh yeah also uh, I haven't had a Dreamwidth or a Livejournal before so I'm probably gonna commit a LOT of faux pas on the established ettiquette for the medium.)

(... sorry.)

(...... also will I ever not feel weirdly uncomfortable about how the Reading page is public?)

... We'll see IF I use this, and HOW, but, well, I might as well do at least ONE thing with it.

..
... one thing, besides following a few people to preserve something from Tumblr, and also picking a garishly fonted purple theme okay I should probably change that yeah fine.

About

I think I like to try to think
myself to be somewhere between
Alice, and Ozma, and Tiffany Aching,
and Syvie (and you see the tack I am taking) --
-- but acting honestly (if I have to be),
I will concede I seem to be most nearly
just the Dormouse.
